Social Studies at Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind means more than simply memorizing dates and facts from a book. It’s real, and it’s happening now!

Participating in hands-on, active learning is central to Social Studies instruction. Students prepare for special activities, giving them meaningful study of content. Teachers use direct instruction in content to strengthen reading, writing, and civics skills. Students connect ideas in practical ways when teachers work across subject areas on projects.

Social Studies at FSDB includes, but is never limited to:

  • Extensive use of a wide variety of technology
  • Collaboration with All Dragons Read
  • Field trips to historical and cultural sites in and around St. Augustine
  • Visits and lectures by local civic, archeological, and history experts
  • Historical character dress-up days
  • Middle School trips to Washington, D.C.
  • High School trips to the state legislature
  • High School participation in Close-Up in Washington, D.C.

Cultural Awareness Day

Exploring cultures and sharing what we’ve learned is the cornerstone of each Spring’s campus-wide Cultural Awareness Day. Learning games, student-created presentations, costumes, foods, dance, and music enliven the study of culture for K-12 students and staff alike.

Curriculum

All curriculum is aligned with federal, state, and school mandates. Course descriptions for all courses are located at the Florida Department of Education website.

FSDB is pilot-testing a new civics program for elementary through high school in the Deaf Department. This program links schools for the Deaf through technology for the purpose of investigating civics issues, exchanging ideas, and eventually competing in Washington, D.C.
