Welcome to the Middle Schools at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB)! Middle School programs and activities engage curious and thoughtful students. Our teachers model a passion for learning and conduct classes in styles which blend traditional approaches with experiential and project style learning opportunities. The 2014-2015 FSDB Teacher of the Year, James Della Penna, is a part of the teaching faculty.
The Middle Schools are dynamic and engaging places of learning that students are proud to call their own. Students in Middle Schools benefit from high academic expectations, individualized instructional opportunities afforded by small class sizes, opportunities for direct accessibility and communication provided by teaching staff members specifically trained to work with deaf/hard of hearing or blind/visually impaired students. Our state-of-the-art synergistic classroom serves as a STEM Lab to further student skills in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math. Access to these and related subject areas are supported through use of our advanced braille, large print and associated technologies.
Our Middle Schools support student growth and we encourage each child to experience new expanded learning roles and opportunities for leadership development. Students are actively involved with competitions such as Battle of the Books, Braille Challenge, MathCounts, Public Speaking, Science Fair, and Spelling Bee. Students can also participate in other Campus Life activities such as athletics, performing arts and recreation, which help to meet our goal of educating the whole student.
The Blind Middle School shares a newsletter with the Blind Elementary School:
The rich academic programs offered in our Middle Schools, our diverse and welcoming community, and opportunities for extracurricular participation, provide students with the critical knowledge and skills needed for success in our High School programs.
