First Title 1 Meeting–Welcome New Parent Team!

The newly formed Title I Parent Advisory Team met for the first time on a rainy Tuesday morning, October 21, 2013 at FSDB. Tracie Snow, Title I Assistant Coordinator and Meeting Chair, brought banana muffins and juice for parents to snack on while deliberating various Title I business matters.

Any Title I parent can attend Title I meetings, in addition to the three school representatives who were nominated by Title I Assistant Principals of each school. Blind Elementary, Blind Middle, Deaf Elementary, and Deaf Middle are the designated Title I schools for this year.

Snow explained to parents that several years ago administrators chose to concentrate Title I funds (services) on younger students, with the aim of preparing them for high school and beyond. This fits well with the new FSDB vision statement: “Preparing students for a lifetime of success.”

Blind Elementary School parent representatives are Naomi Watson, Misty Porter and Meagan Lindberg. Blind Middle School parent representatives are Gabriela Robinson, Mitch or Julie Wilcox, and Saqib Amjad or Saira Saqib. Deaf Elementary School parent representatives are Kenique Sneed, Leanna Hunter and Julie Thomas. Deaf Middle School parent representatives are Kim Satterfield, Ivy Berry, and Kevin or Sheryl Suarez. FSDB administrators are thrilled to welcome these parents to be part of Title I decision-making.

The Title I grant is one “entitlement grant” in the federal No Child Left Behind Act, which specifies that parents must be included and their involvement must be valid and meaningful. Parent feedback will be integrated into the Title I program pending administrative approval (feasibility is always the final consideration).

A special shout-out to goes to teachers from Title I schools who must attend the first meeting so they can provide feedback on Title I Parent Involvement Plans (PIPs) and Title I Family-School Compacts. Carey Roberts attended with Deaf Elementary Assistant Principal Heidi Jordan; Cally Traetto attended with Deaf Middle Assistant Principal Martin Price; Alex Ritter attended with Blind Elementary Assistant Principal Justin Cosgrove; Dr. Kathleen Foley attended with Blind Middle Assistant Principal Justin Cosgrove. Thanks teachers, for your invaluable time!

The next Title I Parent Advisory Team meeting will take place on January 31, 2014 from 8:30 to 9:30 am.  The spring meeting will occur on March 7, 2014 from 8:30 to 9:30 am. There will also be a final May 2013 meeting, details TBA. Agenda details will be specified closer to the dates of these meetings.
