ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (Nov. 3, 2011) – The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind’s curriculum department is hosting an 11th annual Scholastic Book Fair for parents, teachers, students and FSDB staff members Nov. 8-9 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Music Building.
“There will be a great selection of books, posters and school supplies that will be available,” said Marge Hatfield, book fair coordinator.
For individuals who read Braille, Hatfield said that Braille book orders will be taken from the Seedlings catalog.
This year, the Blind Middle School student council is holding a Scholastic “The Great Bedtime Story” pajama drive in conjunction with the book fair, in which the purpose of the drive is to help the organization provide 125,000 children living in group homes, shelters and foster homes across the United States with new pajamas and books. Scholastic is a publication, education and media company that promotes literacy to children worldwide.
A collection box will be available at the event for donations of pajamas of all sizes. Pajamas are requested to be brand new, flame-retardant and a complete top and bottom set. Nightgowns may also be donated.
“Scholastic will match a book with every pair of pajamas collected and then distribute them to children in shelters or foster care in our local area,” Hatfield said. “Individuals who also bring a pair pajamas will receive a $2 coupon off any purchase.”
For every purchase made, FSDB receives Scholastic dollars to use in buying books and educational materials for the school.
The book fair accepts cash, checks and all major credit/debit cards. A 6-percent sales tax will be added to all purchases. All checks can be made payable to “F.S.D.B.”
For parents, teachers, staff and students not able to attend the event, books can be purchased through Scholastic’s Website. Select “Florida,” “Saint Augustine,” and then “FL School Deaf & Blind.”
