Mathletes in Training

Posted: 3/15/2011 in Academics

What motivates middle school students to come to school at 6 am for practice? No, it’s not sports. In FSDB’s Middle School, it’s Math that’s the great motivator!

Deaf Middle School has 8 Matheletes who are stretching their math muscles and are training for the annual NTID Math Counts Competition during the week of April 7-10, 2011. This year’s math team consists of two 6th graders (Joline Durand and Boyd Moore), one 7th grader (Ben Starr), and five 8th graders (Shua Clay, Alyssa Hanbury, Nick Stanfield, Frankie Stewart and Chasien Taylor).

These eight students, who are coached by Donna O’Neill and Scott Trejbal, will fly to Rochester, New York, to compete against other deaf and hard of hearing students from across the nation. The students will take part in three different rounds of competition. The first round, the Sprint round, gives the students 30 minutes to work as many problems as possible. In the next round, the Target round, the students work individually to solve even more difficult problems. During the last round, Team round, the students have the opportunity to work together to solve still more difficult problems.

The students have been training for months to prepare for this competition, and they are motivated. You can follow the excitement as our team competes by visiting our Team Page

The students will be blogging their experiences and the coaches will also be posting important information throughout the weekend.
