Goalball was developed in 1946 in an effort to help in the rehabilitation of visually impaired World War II veterans. The team sport, designed for blind athletes, evolved into a competitive game and fully became a part of the Paralympics during the 1980 Summer Paralympics in Arnhem, Netherlands. Participants compete in teams of three and throw a ball with bells in it into the opponent’s goal. The players judge the position and movement of the ball from the sounds of the bells in the ball.
