ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (Nov. 16, 2011) – Three students from the blind middle school department at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind were recognized for their science fair projects during the school’s 4th annual science fair Nov. 14.

First place went to seventh-grade student Emely Reyes for her project, “Taste Buds,” which focused on how taste buds respond to different foods and how the sense of smell plays a part in how food is tasted.

Eighth-grader Jake Tessar won second place for his “Fruit and Veggie Power” project and third place went to seventh-grader Ashley Distler for her project “Are You Telling a Lie.” Tessar’s project tested how ordinary fruits and vegetables, such as potatoes and lemons, could produce electrical power. Distler focused on whether an individual’s strength falters if the truth is not being told.

Nearly 50 projects were submitted this year from the blind department that were judged by Dr. Maia McGuire from the University of Florida and Dr. Mathew Brown from Flagler College.
