Student Councils play a clear role in every school. Active Student Councils in the Department for the Deaf and the Department for the Blind provide an important voice for students during their exciting high school years. In addition to carrying student concerns through channels, the councils help develop student interests, and they provide a framework for social responsibility. Students participating on the councils are encouraged to look beyond personal issues to make decisions that are best for students in general and for the department at large.
Each class and each student organization sends student-representatives to the council. All council members must maintain a quality GPA and must demonstrate good citizenship. The representatives attend monthly meetings, and they may serve on task forces as well. While on the council, members learn basic parliamentary procedure. They develop their leadership skills, and serve as positive role models for other students.
The Student Councils at FSDB have planned, hosted, and coordinated a variety of fund-raising activities for March of Dimes and Children With Cancer. In addition, the Blind Department Student Council plans, coordinates, and leads specific department events.
